General Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee - 1756-1818 Married - Matilda Lee they had 3 children- Philip Lee 1784-1794 Lucy Grimes Lee 1786-1860 Henry Lee 1787-1837 Henry remarried after Matilda's death- Anne Carter they had five children- Charles Carter Lee 1798-1871 Ann Kinloch Lee 1800-1864 Sidney Smith Lee 1802-1869 Sidney Smith served in the US Navy until the Civil War when he resigned from the US Navy and joined the Confederate States Navy as a Captain. He is also the father of five boys, with the oldest being Cavalry General Fitzhugh Lee, who served under General JEB Stuart. Robert Edward Lee 1807-1870

Robert Edward Lee 1807-1870 Married on June 30, 1831 to Mary Anna Randolph Custis 1808-1873
Mary Anna Randolph Custis Lee Mary was the daughter of George Washington Parke Custis and Mary Lee Fitzhugh and was the only child that lived to adulthood. G.W.P. Custis was the grandson of Martha Washington and the adopted son of George Washington . Mary's father didn't want her to marry Robert Lee, but eventually gave in to his daughter's wishes. Mrs. Lee had severe arthritis forcing her into crutches or wheel chair in the later years of her life. During the Civil War, Mrs. Lee lost her beloved home Arlington (now known as Arlington House within Arlington Cemetery). While her husband was fighting the war, she traveled from relative to relative until early 1864 when she and her daughters moved in with her son Custis and his friends at 707 Franklin Street in Richmond. She and her daughters knitted socks for the soldiers during their free time. After the War, while her husband was president of Washington College, Mrs. Lee spent her time mothering the students at Washington College and the near by Virginia Military Institute (VMI) doing all she could to help them while away from their families. Mrs. Lee was devastated when Annie died in 1862 and even more so when her husband died in 1870. She was further traumatized when a second daughter (Agnes) died in 1873, herself passing away shortly thereafter.
Mary and Robert had seven Children George Washington Custis Lee 1832-1913
Known as Custis to his family, he graduated first in his class at West Point, and served in the US Army Engineers until May of 1861 when he resigned and helped the engineers in the south build defenses for Richmond. He later served on the staff of Jefferson Davis. Late in the war he was given his own command of mostly boys, old men and wounded former soldiers and the rank of Major General. He was captured at Saylor's Creek in 1865. After the war he taught civil engineering at VMI and after his father's death became the president of Washington & Lee University. He served as President for 27 years before retiring to Ravensworth. Mary Custis Lee 1835-1918
Mary Custis Lee Known as "Daughter" or "Sister" to her family, Mary spent her most of her life traveling around the country and later the world. During the out break of the Civil War she was at home. She helped to pack up and leave Arlington house the beloved home of her mother and her childhood. Mary managed to get herself stuck behind enemy lines for close to a year, which grieved her father sorely. She was independent and outspoken for a woman of her time. Mary never married but did have many suitors. The most famous of which is JEB Stuart. Even though nothing came of the romance while at West Point they remained good friends until his death in May of 1864. William Henry Fitzhugh Lee 1837-1891
Known as Rooney to his family. He served for several years in the US Cavalry until he married Charlotte Wickham. He joined the Confederate Cavalry and was soon a Major General In JEB Stuart's Cavalry with his 1st Cousin Fitzhugh. He and Charlotte had two children both of which died. Rooney was wounded at Brandy Station and was home recovering when Federal Cavalry came to take him prisoner. His wife died while he was in prison. He was exchanged in March of 1864, he quickly rejoined his unit. After the war he returned to what was left of his farm "The White House", which had been burnt down during the seven days battles, and began farming. He later married Mary Tabb Bolling and had several children. He became a senator to Virginia in the US Congress. He had just been elected for his third term as senator just before he died in 1891. Anne Carter Lee 1839-1862
Anne was the instigator in the family. She was lively and bright. At an early age she had put scissors in her eye. She didn't lose her sight but she did have scarring to the point that she didn't have photographs taken of her. She and her sister Agnes were very close and spent most of their lives as "the Girls" since they were close in age and were always together. At the start of the civil war she was at "the White House" visiting her sister-in-law and helping with the young baby. During the seven days battle she, her sister Mildred and her mother were stuck behind the Union lines. General McClellan escorted the ladies across the lines to safety. In 1862 she had gone to a spa for partaking of the healing waters. Unfortunately for her she contracted typhoid and died in October of that year. Annie never married. Eleanor Agnes Lee 1841-1873
Eleanor Agnes Lee is portrayed by Ashley Shortell of the FPCWH Known as Agnes to her family, she was the second half of "the Girls". at the out break of the Civil War Agnes was at home along with Mary and helped to pack up as much of the family belongs as possible. Though Agnes never married she had many suitors. Her Cousin Orton Williams had proposed but she refused him. She was devastated when he was hung by the US Army for treason several months later. After the war she stayed with her family in Lexington Virginia where her father was President of Washington College. Agnes' Journals from her youth have been published under the title "Growing up in the 1850's: the Journal of Agnes Lee" Edited and Foreword by Mary Custis Lee Debutts. Robert Edward Lee, Jr. 1843-1914
Rob was in college at the University of Virginia at the outbreak of war. He pestered his father for a year before his father relented and allowed him to join the army. His father helped him to chose a unit and get everything he needed to be in the Rockbridge artillery. In 1862 he showed up his fathers headquarters poorly attired and lost. He was then assigned to the Cavalry and put on his Brother Rooney's staff and promoted to Lieutenant. After the war he helped his brother Rooney get his farm going and then went to his own farm. Rob married twice after the war. First to Charlotte Taylor Haxall who died in 1872. he later married Juliet Carter who was 16 years his junior. Mildred Childe Lee 1846-1905
Mildred Lee Known as "Milly" or "Life" to her family, she was the vivacious and bubbly one of the family. Milly was in School in Winchester, VA when the war broke out. Do to the frequency of the town changing hands Milly was moved to a school in North Carolina to finish out her schooling. In 1863 she returned to the family in Richmond who were now staying with Custis in the house he rented there. Because of so many deaths in the family starting with Annie and their Nephew in 1862 and ending with Rooney's wife in December of 1863 the family morale was low and Mildred took it upon herself to fix the problem. So she adopted a squirrel which she named Custis Morgan after her brother Custis and after John Hunt Morgan who was known for being hard to keep caged. After the war Mildred would take long walks with her father and help him to get his mind off the late war. Mildred never married for as she said herself nobody could compare to her father.
